Bringing Scientists and Educators Closer Together

Those who become teachers in K-12 schools receive their education and attitudes about science from the science courses they take in college. The nature and quality of the courses as well as the nature of science that teachers take from these courses are in the purview of science faculty. But there is often little discussion among science, science education and education faculty members. To encourage this conversation AAAS convened teams of administrators for science and education in 1996 from 50 universities. A major finding from the conference was that quality teachers of science are only developed when active partnerships are created among those who share responsibility for their education. The results of this dialogue, Seizing Opportunities: Collaborating for Excellence in Teacher Preparation, will be reprinted in our Archives in coming months.
